Idaho features beautiful scenery, and one of the best ways to see it is via the many mountainous trails of Yellowstone-Teton Territory. With so many trails and so little time, why not take an off-road vehicle to help make the most of your time?
Here are five trails and off-road attractions perfect for a memorable ATV, UTV or OHV experience for the whole family.
St. Anthony Sand Dunes
Considered to be the ultimate playground for off-road vehicles, the St. Anthony Sand Dunes offers over 50 miles of open dunes to explore. The 10,600 acres of sand have been sculpted into small, medium and large dunes—some are more than 400 feet tall. Whatever your skill level, the dunes has something for everyone.
Railroad Grade Trail
Starting in Ashton, ID and ending in West Yellowstone, MT, Railroad Grade trail is a 50-mile (one way) scenic trail. Some of the highlights of the trip include Upper and Lower Mesa Falls, Big Springs and Yellowstone National Park. For such a long one-way trip, overnight accommodations are available in both Ashton and West Yellowstone.
Mecham Hollow – Sherman Peak Loop
Open to all OHV’s, the loop is roughly 25 miles of both trails and roads of Northwest Montpelier. Full trails open around June and feature a handful of camping areas. No services are available, so bring all you will need for the trip.
Wolverine Creek – Hawley Gulch
This 10.5-mile long trail offers superb scenery, including a 6,711-foot lookout mountain. Part of the Caribou-Targhee National Forest, base camps are available by the Hawley Gulch- Poison Flat area.
Leaning Fir – Stinking Springs
A 15-mile scenic look into the Caribou-Targhee National Forest, touring the Kelly Mountain and Stinking Spring Canyon. Trails are usually clear by the mid-end of May. Ensure you pack items you’ll need, as there are no services on this trail.
