What is CBD?

If you read the news or shop for health products, you’ve probably heard of CBD. CBD seem to be everywhere these days, and people are taking it for all sorts of reasons and to combat all sorts of maladies. You probably know that CBD comes from hemp, the same plant as marijuana, but you may not know much more about it than that. So what is CBD, exactly? How does it work, and what does it do? And how can you use CBD to improve your own life?

Cannabis and cannabinoids

Cannabis, or marijuana, is more than just a plant. For thousands of years, the hemp plant has been used for everything from making rope to, of course, getting “high.” Marijuana’s high affects our brains and bodies in all sorts of ways, and part of the reason is that there are all sorts of active chemicals in the plant. Called “cannabinoids,” these active ingredients can be identified, isolated, and concentrated by experts. THC, the cannabinoid most responsible for marijuana’s high, is one of the cannabinoids. CBD, is another.

Meet CBD

The cannabinoid CBD is cannabidiol (that’s what CBD stands for). CBD is associated with some powerful traits. It can stop some types of seizures and ease physical pain. CBD also has soothing effects, and can reportedly counter anxiety and even depression, some users report.

What CBD is used for

CBD’s powerful effects on the body and its ability to calm and soothe users makes it a valuable option for treating certain diseases, conditions, and symptoms. When we talk about the medicinal effects of marijuana, we are very often talking about CBD.

Of course, you don’t need to be prescribed CBD in order to use it and enjoy its positive health and lifestyle effects. CBD is often concentrated and turned into products that people can take at home. Producers sell CBD products which are legal or effectively legal in many areas, including both states with legal cannabis and states that have not yet legalized recreational marijuana.

CBD has become so popular that it has even started popping up in foods and drinks available at restaurants, bars, and nightclubs. CBD-infused cocktails and beers are just another way to enjoy CBD.

How to take CBD

You can buy CBD products, including tinctures and CBD edibles, in person or online. Dosage recommendations vary from expert to expert and company to company, but it’s hard to go wrong (since CBD is safe and does not get its users high, dosage isn’t a huge concern). Taking CBD is as easy as just ingesting it: edibles should be eaten, of course, and tinctures can be taken orally with a dropper (placing the drops under the tongue is a popular recommendation from producers and users alike).

CBD can be taken at any time of day, with or without food. Some users take it before work to keep them productive and free of anxiety; others take it before bed to help them sleep. You should experiment with your own CBD use and see what schedule and methods work best for you and fit best into your busy life.
