Now that the clocks have gone back, those cold, dark mornings are here to say, as are those long nights. That said, winter hasn’t quite set in just yet, and there is time to enjoy the last of what autumn has to offer. London is a must-visit all year round and autumn is no different; the capital still has plenty to offer.
Grab your parka, put on some gloves and wrap your scarf before taking a stroll through one of London’s many amazing parks. Admittedly, you will be hard-pressed to find a time of year when the capital’s parks don’t look stunning, however, they are definitely at their best during autumn.
Not only are they quieter but a wonderful riot of colour runs through the tree-lined walkways. Battersea, Crystal Palace, Victoria, Richmond…there are so many to choose from. And should you visit the latter, be prepared to be amazed, with over 600 deer taking up residence amidst the orange and yellow hues.
To escape the cold, head to one of the capital’s many museums. The British Museum houses a fascinating collection of artefacts from around the globe and admission is free, making for a brilliant low-cost getaway – perfect with Christmas just around the corner.
The Natural History Museum is equally as impressive and great for little ones as the dinosaur exhibition is sure to inspire. With Remembrance Day just around the corner, a visit to the Imperial War Museum would be most fitting; these displays take you on a journey through modern conflicts, from the First World War to present day.
Christmas is on its way and where better to start your shopping than London? The capital is plentiful with bustling shopping districts, each sporting their theme and specialties. Luxury goods in Mayfair and unique haunts in Covent Garden, or huge shopping centres such as Westfield… the choice is yours!
There’s also, of course, Oxford Street at the heart of London shopping, with over 300 shops to peruse, from the legendary Selfridges to bargain-basement Primark. Harrods is a short way away and is the height of British retail luxury – big and little kids alike will love the toy section.
No weekend break is complete without an amazing meal. And at this time of year, an oversized bowl of pasta is the ultimate foodie favourite; a warm, hearty dish is just what the doctor ordered to keep your insides nice and toasty while you explore what the city has to offer.
Smothered in cheese, tantalising tomato, mouth-watering and more-ish – Pasta de Padella has it all. For a pit stop, hot chocolate cannot be beaten at this time of year. Melted marshmallows, masses of cream, and luscious flakes – Fortnum and Mason offers the most decadent cocoa you’ll ever try.
With around 1,500 hotels, London certainly isn’t short of places to stay and there’s plenty of options to suit all of your wants and needs, as well as fitting within your budget. Dorsett Hotel, City of London is the perfect haunt for relaxation and tranquility – well needed after a busy day out sightseeing and shopping!
