Protecting Your Skin Throughout All Stages Of Life

When you think about the largest organ in your body, you might think that the intestines or lungs hold this specification. In reality, our skin is considered the largest organ, making up about 16% of our mass. As the largest and most vulnerable organ, the skin is responsible for keeping the more delicate bits protected from infection and exposure. Though our skin is amazingly flexible and strong, we must protect it if we want it to look healthy for years to come.

Here are some ways you can take care of your skin and keep it looking great at any age.

Restrict and Protect Against UV Radiation

Extended and prolonged exposure to the sun is high among the leading causes of wrinkling, ageing and discolouration of the skin. Once damage from ultraviolet radiation has set in, it can be hard to cover up and impossible to remedy. The best method to keep your skin looking young and supple is to limit how much radiation your body receives in the first place.

Though they may seem safe, the lamps in sun beds emit the same harmful UV radiation that the sun does and should be avoided for those concerned with the health and longevity of their skin. Professionals at the London Dermatology Centre generally recommend to cover your skin in protective garments such as long shirts and wide brimmed hats, and apply sunscreen with an SPF rating of at least 30 to any skin left uncovered.

Follow Good Hygiene Principles

Keeping your skin clean and exfoliated can prevent acne or other skin conditions while peeling away dead skin to amplify your natural glow. However, it is important to remember that harsh cleansers or forceful scrubbing can have a negative impact on our skin’s health. A thorough – but gentle – routine is recommended for the best results.

Choose products that are gentle on the skin when selecting a proper cleansing soap or gel. Gentle massaging with non-abrasive exfoliants will remove the bulk of debris without causing damage. Finish your routine with a good rinse with warm water and soft pats with a clean towel to dry.

Staying Moisturised to Prevent Damage

Also, a key to staying in good overall health, keeping your body hydrated can keep your skin looking wonderful all the time. When our bodies are deprived of the fluids they need, it can leave our skin looking pale, deflated and cracked. Apart from drinking enough water, there are other methods you can employ to keep your skin soft and pliable.

A hot shower can rinse away natural oils and skin conditioners that our bodies produce, leading to dry and easily cracked skin. It is advised to shower at a lower temperature to preserve and protect the health of your skin, and to supplement this regimen with rich moisturising creams to seal in hydration.

We only get one suit of skin, so take good care of it. Preventative measures can eliminate – or at the least minimise – harmful and irreversible damage if followed thoroughly. If you have ignored the health and well-being of your skin in the past, it is never too late to implement a plan to renew your natural beauty.
